In many countries and regions the water safety is still shaping up and there is need for development in order to guarantee safe water for all end-users. Water safety can be enhanced by improving water treatment, water supply and sanitation. Water quality monitoring and risk management of water supply are essential tools for water safety.

Mrs. Jahja highlighted the importance of research activities in the following areas:

Development of real time water quality monitoring systems for:

  • drinking water distribution networks
  • mining industry

Development of advanced treatment processes for:

  • cleaning mining industries' waste waters; special focus is on removal of dissolved metals and sulphates from waste waters


  • Utilization of separately collected organic waste streams to energy
  • Utilization of industrial waste streams to energy and biomaterials; main focus in pulp and paper industry
